Humanitarian Efforts

Dr. Bowman believes in helping those who are less fortunate. He provides many hours of humanitarian aid working on wonderful people in our state and world. Dr. Bowman participates in the Utah Headstart Program, Salt Lake Inter-City Mission, and Utah Give Kids a Smile. Each of these organizations and providing doctors are dedicated to helping children and adults with dental needs at little or no cost to the patient.

In the summer of 2010, Dr Bowman was called on by a colleague to venture with his team to provide dental services to the people of Kenya. He joined this team organized by and traveled eight hours from Nairobi to a village called Migori. He stayed at the “Brittney’s Home of Grace” orphanage, which is home to over 100 children. These children live in a community with boys’ and girls’ dorms, a library, a dairy, chickens, goats, and bee farm. They provide the children with religious and educational opportunities that they would not be able to experience without the Kenya Relief organization. The goal of the orphanage is to become self-sustaining, and they are making great strides in becoming such.

Kenya Relief has built a small "hospital" on the grounds near the orphanage that provides medical and dental care through a team approach. Dr. Bowman’s team included dental and medical professionals from all around the United States. They worked from early morning to late in the night providing dentistry to hundreds who had walked many miles with dental needs.

A Brief excerpt from Dr Bowman's Kenya journal:
"I must write about an experience that happened today in the clinic. Every day I have had some type of very unusual experience.  Anyway, it was my second to last patient of the day. He was a young man of 23 years. He was very handsome and spoke fairly good English. He needed a lower left molar removed, so I numbed him.  While waiting for him to get numb, I happened to look at his shoes. They were just a piece of rubber with some split rubber sides. I thought to myself, “this young guy walked all this way and has been waiting all day long to be seen for a tooth that has been bothering him for who knows how long.” I just couldn't bear to see him walk out of the clinic and all the way back to his home with those "shoes".  I thought about all the shoes I own and take for granted. The impression I received from the Spirit was to take off my shoes and give them to him, which I immediately did.  He was very grateful and kind about the offering. I untied my shoes took his "shoes" off and tied my shoes on him. They fit him like a glove. We take so much for granted, but with the help of the Lord we can overcome our natural selves.
I can tell you this is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in a long time.  I have treasured the experience with the kids here at Brittany House and have felt their love and need. It has been a blessing to be associated these past few days with so many people here at Brittany House that have devoted so much of their time and talent to lift these young children who need them so much.
